Exam 6th january
Q1)
Film posters use genre conventions and elements of media language to convey a meaning all of the time. For example in 'The Plague Of The Zombies' the poster portrays several ideas to the viewer. The title uses gothic style font, synonymous with the horror genre. Via the text being this way the audience can identify the genre of the film and some aspects of it. Moreover, using a second example 'Pride+Prejudice+Zombies" font style we can gather that this film may be more regal and maybe less horrific than the former. The audience can gather this via the use of bronze/ gold text and the more clear aesthetically pleasing font.
Secondly, "The Plague of the Zombies' poster uses very interesting imagery which catches the attention of the viewer. It uses a zombie hoard in the left side of the image to present the viewer with fear over the shear volume of zombies there are. Moreover, the use of a woman laid out across the bottom section of the poster has many meanings. The colour of her skin tone and the zombies contrasts greatly to portray the differences between the looks of the zombies and humans. Leading on from that the way she is laid is vulnerable and creates fear for her as she is in a position of submission to the zombies. The use of a woman in the poster is common for the age this was created in as women were seen as objects for a mans eye and something for a man to help, so this imagery corresponds with the times. The zombie on the right of the image has a symbol on his head, this symbol has similarities to a few symbols. It bears a faint similarity to a Swastika of the Nazis which could be seen as something that will gain the attention of people as this movie was only released 21 years after WW2.
Finally, 'Pride+Prejudice+Zombies' has hegemonically attractive people in the centre of the poster which would appeal to the years of 2016 when it was released as more and more people were becoming focused on the looks of a cast. The poster looks to be set in medieval times which would be easy to attract attention to as there are not many interpretations of the zombie genre that are set in these times. Also the use of weapons tells the viewer that this film will be more of an action film also which combines two very well liked genres.
Q2)
Van Zoonen's suggestion is correct to a certain extent however in more recent times female characters have become more powerful and are just as compelling as male protagonists. In Humans Anita is the robot for a family, this family consists of a working mother (the main breadwinner) and a stay at home father. Humans does not conform to this ideology as characters from both genders act as domestic so this is not the case fully. The mother making a more money than her husband goes against this idea and perhaps the fact that he has to buy Anita to help the family do domestic jobs suggests that men are less efficient at house work. The gender roles are reversed and it is very significant.
However, I do not completely disagree. In humans, there is a lack of representation of political figures that are in positions of significant power. The owner of the robotic company is a male and is the higher up of a lot of people
In The Returned, Van Zoonens suggestion could be seen as true as Julies relationship with her husband corresponds with this claim. Julie st
Q3)
In Humans media text is marketed to reach specific audiences via specific references and themes within the show. One theme of the show is that one race of people is trying to gain equality with another which resonates with people of manyédifferent races. They may see similarities between the inequality of their people and the inequality of the AIs. Moreover, the theme of when do robots become classed as human is very relevant in today's society with the rapid speed at which technology is progressing. The main characters of the show being that the robots are able to think and feel creates a big question within the show which is scarily realistic.
Moreover, with humans being a show about Robots it will reach a sci fi audience this will eventually gain a viewership. Also by having a hegemonically attractive cast people of all genders and sexualities would watch it.
Q4)
Humans success is largely down to its contemporary contexts as they drive the story forwards, without these contexts the story wouldn't have as much drama and heart in it. Without the context of these robots needing equality with people the story would not be as engaging.
These contemporary contexts give the platform for engaging series long narratives to be explored.
